BALLS

A short fiction film exploring the hypothetical origins of Wuthering Height's Heathcliff - based on true stories of foundlings from 18th and 19th Century England that might have inspired Emily Brontë's character. Balls was commissioned by the Brontë Parsonage Museum and Foundling Museum, with support from RRU Liverpool and Impossible. It was produced by Fury Films.

BALLS: LILY COLE, IN CONVERSATION WITH JOSHUA OPPENHEIMER

The film director Joshua Oppenheimer (Oscar nominated for his documentaries about the Indonesian genocide: The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence) spoke with Cole about how the historical narrative of Balls speaks to our contemporary politics, the limits on collective empathy, and the power of film to change the stories by which we know the world.

We headed to the woods to meet Mark Boyle, who also goes by the moniker 'The Moneyless Man.' The Irish artist and activist is best known for creating the Free Economy Community, and for having lived without money since November 2008.
Living off grid—without electricity or technology—Boyle opens his doors to visitors who can choose to share his lifestyle for as long, or as little, as they desire.

LIGHTS IN DARK PLACES: THE REFUGEE CRISIS IN GREECE

Since 2015 over a million refugees and migrants have tried to reach Europe by boat. Over 9200 of them have drowned on the journey. Those who make it safely to land are taken to refugee camps, where they are kept indefinitely while their claims are being processed. Every week, 2-4 people die in the overcrowded and unsanitary refugee camps on the Greek islands like Samos.
